Companies experimenting with ways to use radio frequencies more efficiently to wirelessly transmit data will get powerful endorsement this month when a White House advisory committee highlights the technologies in a report, the New York Times reports.

The presidential advisory committee, which includes executives from Google and Microsoft, will mention new technologies that have made more flexible use of spectrum to address the looming spectrum crunch telecommunications providers have warned about.

Cognitive radio, in which wireless devices scan for available frequencies and choose the best one to use, will be among the technogies addressed in the report. Florida-based xG Technology has developed a version for the Army to use on military bases. Its competitors include Shared Spectrum, which has also developed cognitive radio systems for the Defense Department, and Cognitive Radio Technologies, which is working to commercialize technology developed at Virginia Tech, according to the Times.
