What We Do

Pets of the Homeless is a nonprofit all volunteer organization that provides pet food and veterinary care to the homeless and less fortunate in local communities across the United States and Canada.

  • graph_homeless_w_petsWhy?
3.5 million* Americans are homeless. Between 5% to 10% of homeless people have dogs and/or cats. In some areas of the country the rate is as high as 24%.
  • Who?
Each homeless person has a unique story; they are people with mental disorders, addicts, parolees, families, disabled, elderly, abused spouses and teens, returning veterans.
  • How?
Our member collection sites accept donated pet food from people like you.  They then deliver it to distributing organizations (food banks, homeless shelter and/or soups kitchens) which have agreed to distribute the pet food to the homeless and poor.

We award grants to veterinarians that go to where the homeless congregate and provide veterinary care such as vaccines, spay/neuter and other needed treatments.  We award grants to homeless shelters that will allow pets sanctuary with their owners.

Recruiting collection sites and distributing organizations as well as awarding grants are a small part of what we do.  We answer hundreds of requests for information on how to start a pet food pantry, how to volunteer, how to help a homeless person on the street, how to donate if there isn't a collection site in the area, where to take pet food, and where to get pet food or veterinary care.  We work with school children, Scouts, churches and companies who want to help.

Our Mission:

Through Pets of the Homeless also known as Feeding Pets of the Homeless, we will do our part in helping to reduce hunger in pets belonging to the homeless and the less fortunate and provide veterinary care for those pets in communities across the country.

We believe in the healing power of companion pets and of the human/animal bond which is very important to life.

Our actions will include the following:

  • Promote to veterinarians and pet related businesses the importance of joining the organization as a collection site
  • Speak out on the issue of pets of homeless and disadvantaged
  • Campaign to food distributing organizations the importance of distributing pet food to the less fortunate
  • Provide grants to licensed veterinarians and other nonprofit organizations that meet our objective to administer veterinary care to pets of the homeless
  • Provide grants to nonprofit homeless shelters that will allow pets sanctuary with their owners

  1. Thank you for highlighting Pets of the Homeless. It is through word of mouth that our organziation continues to grow. We are in need of cash donations due to the increasing need of veterinary care for pets of the homeless. Many pets suffer because their owners do not have money to seek treatment.
Thanks again, Genevieve Frederick, Exec. Dir./Founder
