Some of Australia's leading experts on autism will speak about the disorder at a two-day conference starting today on Queensland's Sunshine Coast.

Autism Queensland is holding the symposium which will bring together parents and carers of people with autism, teachers, therapists and other specialists.

Difficulties in communicating and socialising are a common problem for people with autism.

Clinical psychologist Professor Tony Attwood will speak tomorrow about strategies to help young people with autism to make friends and reduce bullying.

"Most acts of bullying and teasing are not witnessed by a teacher or an adult," he said.

"Eighty-five per cent are hidden so no matter what retribution you may have for bullying and teasing, you're not going to see it, but other kids do.

"It's getting that [a] majority of kids [need] to step in and say 'it's not cool, we're not scared, it's not funny, we don't accept it'."
